5 TIPS FOR STRESS (ahhh!)

For the past few days, I have been struggling with something that feels a whole lot like anxiety. I’m not sure why I’m feeling this way, because nothing should be wrong, but I like to keep this blog transparent and open.

While I deal with stress every so often, I’ve never felt quite like this. It attacks randomly in the middle of the night, when I’m happily asleep in bed, and it’ll wake me up from the freedom of my dreams. It will strike while I’m working on schoolwork or with friends, and I’m completely baffled by what’s going on.

For the next few months, I have decided to take a break from writing. I will still write on my blog, but I wrote so furiously over the summer because I knew school was coming up, and I need to put my extra efforts into my private pilot license. Therefore, I do believe some of this anxiety stems from the fact that I am not writing, and that has always been an outlet for me.

I thought it would be beneficial to jot down some of my favorite stress tips, for you if you need them, and definitely for my own countenance. Everyone deals with that nervous flutter in your stomach, or thoughts that just won’t slow down, so hopefully these tips are applicable to everyone out there reading this.


1. WRITE WRITE WRITE

I am assuming most of those who read this blog are writers. You guys know what it’s like to get an absolute rush of adrenaline while working on a project, and the pitfalls of writer’s block. However, it has been scientifically proven that writing your own thoughts (if you’re like me and love writing fiction, sorry, it’s time to get a journal) helps your negative emotions flutter away.

Is it a permanent solution? Maybe not. But there is beauty to stripping yourself down to the bone, analyzing what you’re thinking and feeling, and realizing that you may have to change yourself in order to improve.


2. EXERCISE (eeeep!)

This one is tough. Some of you love exercise, and probably the majority of you aren’t the biggest fan. That being said, working out releases endorphins, which are basically happy hormones, into the bloodstream. This can relieve stress tremendously, and you’re listening to your body at the same time you are healing your mind.

I know that exercise can be painful and boring and monotonous. Whenever I jog on the treadmill, I find myself getting so bored. This is just a mental roadblock created by my brain, because I’m a lazy person. I need to learn to fight through things and work for what I want to be. Exercise isn’t the be all and end all of proper healing, but it is a tip.


3. TALK TO SOMEONE

Over the course of my adolescence and young adulthood, I’ve grown a trait that annoys people to no end. I’m particularly cryptic, and this is because I love keeping my emotions locked up tight. As a writer, I’ve learned to unleash emotions in all of my characters. As a regular person, I’m quite the opposite. I don’t want to be seen as vulnerable. I don’t want people to worry about me. And normally, I’m just fine.

However, I’ve learned that sometimes one should open up. It is selfish to keep yourself locked away like a medieval princess. People truly care about you, and it’s selfish not to be honest with them and let them know what is in your heart.

My roommate loves “Late night chats.” When I first heard the idea, I was absolutely confused. What did that mean, and why does anyone want to late night chat? Basically, the situation is that the two of us will share our thoughts and feelings from the day before we go to bed.


4. READ THE BIBLE

This can apply to anyone out there. I know some of you guys aren’t Christian, but this can apply to you as well. The Bible has amazing, comforting passages that stir thoughts and reduce stress.

 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life” (Matthew 6:25-27)


5. BE HONEST W/YOURSELF

This is hugely, grandly mega-important. One must be honest with him or herself always. It is crucial to remember that you are only responsible for yourself and your actions. If you want to be a better person, it’s up to you. While communicating with others is also essential, the biggest component lies within yourself.

Honesty is key. Honesty leads to a better outlook, despite the consequences. Honesty asks you to humble yourself for the betterment of those around you. Honesty requires patience and belief.

It requires thought. Your thought.


There you go. This has been beneficial to me, just to jot my thoughts down. 🙂

Maybe it would help you, with whatever you may be going through, to also jot down some tips. These tips could apply to anything in the world, but it would allow you to ruminate over your journey so far, and… In the future, it will act as a stake in the ground to see how far you’ve come.

WHAT TO DO WHEN BORED (AND AT WORK)

So, I’m a working gal (LOL) who makes little over minimum wage in my home state. My choice of work? A small country shop that sells the sweetest gifts. I work from 9-5 (cue some sort of country song I barely remember), and there are hours when nobody sets a foot in the store.

So, what do I do to cure my boredom? I’ve compiled a list of some tips I’ve employed since my employment… And maybe you can use these too!


1. JAM TO MUSIC

This is crucial. When nobody is around, you can truly JAM to music. If you’re in a cubicle, you can hum along; if you’re in a shop like me and there’s nobody around, it’s time to electric slide.

For those of you who hate music, I’m sorry, but if you crave social interaction, you can listen to people whose problems include where to vacation, how much they’re in love with a significant other, and other meaningless problems. I’m just saying, when you’re bored enough, you can really analyze some lyrical genius.

2. READ A BOOK

This is a good one. I discovered Faulkner last summer during these long stretches of nothingness. Then came Gabriel Garcia Marquez. And John Grisham (who does not need to be discovered, because he is everywhere, and rightfully so.)

Reading transports me to another world, and if I’ve got hours to kill anyway, it is a perfect distraction (“Perfect Illusion” by Lady Gaga, anyone?). For fun I read my own books as I’m pining for somebody to come visit me in the shop.

Some people in this world do not like reading (I am sorry). This may not apply to you, or maybe, just maybe, if you get bored enough–you will discover John Grisham and thank me in the process.

3. WRITE A BLOG POST

This is what I am doing right now. Blogging about your boredom is a one-in-a-kind experience. I’m not sure what more I can say about this one, except be like Creed in The Office who opens up a blog on a Word document (www.creedthoughts.gov.www/creedthoughts).

Maybe a better idea is to watch The Office to kill time (this is possibly the best advice I’ll give in this post).

4. CLEAN (SWEEP, DUST, WINDEX)

Clean, clean, clean. Not like the Taylor Swift song, but like there are a bunch of invisible roaches all over the place. While I hate cleaning otherwise, I like to clean at work, because it passes the time and makes me feel like I’m actually doing something of value.

5. WRITE A BOOK

I won’t admit to doing that as I work, but…

Maybe you’ll discover your passion as a writer. Gain access to a computer and jot out your thoughts. It’s like a blog but using your thoughts on fake people. Very therapeutic, if you ask me.

(Speaking of, I did just finish another cheesy romance. I’m going to send it to Harlequin, and we’ll see what happens there. If it is not accepted there, I will self-publish it in the next few months.)

6. CHAT WITH FRIENDS

This is self-explanatory.

To spice it up, send them Snapchats of your dancing to the music you’re jamming to; prank call them, yay; ask them to come visit you, although that can be doubtful.

7. THINK ABOUT LIFE

Maybe the most serious element on this list, but hours of nothingness can cause serious deep thought of regret, memories, and exciting times ahead! And, to be honest, if I wasn’t bored, then I probably wouldn’t be thinking about life and remembering how good mine is. This may seem selfish, but it’s true, because in our world, it is so easy to become distracted by all that life is throwing at us–and constantly!

So, thinking about life can help pass the time… But it can also make it go by slower, which is a problem…

8. REALIZE YOU’RE MAKING MONEY (YAY)

MONEY! DINERO! IMPORTANTE!

This is huge. Work is crucial because it gives us something to do–and financial assistance to keep on living. Therefore, when I’m the most bored I can possibly be, I remember that my bank account is growing at least (until I splurge on a pedicure, aghhh).

MONEY! DINERO! GRACIAS A DIOS!


So, there you have it. Here are some of my tricks to survive a boring work day, and this is just my summer college job. I can’t wait for the real world !!!

But, seriously, I’m very thankful to be employed and have the opportunity to feed myself! It’s awesome to have a job and another step toward adulthood.

Therefore, I hope this doesn’t come across as a “complaining” post, because I’m genuinely so thankful for the opportunity to work!

SUMMER’S HERE (and reality too)

*I realized that summer does not start until June 21. Please 
excuse my inability to remember which continent I am on LOL.

Now that I am back home in the States, things have shifted a little bit. It’s summer, which means that I’ll be cranking out as many novels as my poor fingers can type…

***MINOR INTERRUPTION: Someone just rang my doorbell, and it turned out to be a neighbor, who literally threw her dog at me. For those of you who do not know, I’ve never had a dog, never really been around dogs, and am kinda scared of them… So that was interesting.***

Anyway, summer is my best time for creative thought. I am finishing my magical realism novel, starting another romance, and have plans for another late summer book. However, as a rising junior in college, I also have to get a job and attempt to book flying lessons. Therefore, I am a bit stressed!

I have been Stateside for all of four days, and I’m already feeling the pressure of my future. Money, location, and the unknown are all weighing on me, but I know that God’s got this. (Cue “God’s Plan” by Drake, thank you.)

***MINOR INTERRUPTION AGAIN: I discovered that I am allergic to horses last summer, when I came to the South from California. Just now I have been sneezing my head off because I held that pup…***

Therefore, I’d like to set some goals for the summer and see if I am able to conquer them!


GOAL #1: BOOK SITCH

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a writer who loves to write. I am almost done with my sixteenth novel (that doesn’t mean all sixteen novels are good, by any means). However, I think this one has some cinematic vibes to it, and I’m not sure if I’ll try to agent it or self-publish. I’m a little tired of trying to find an agent for my books, because I’ve realized it is such a daunting situation. Even if I get agented, will my book ever even get published? Who knows. That is the crisis I’m facing now.

Anyway, my goal is to find an agent, send out my manuscripts to as many people as possible, to gain experience and to get my name out there. If I don’t find an agent, so what? I’m not a writer to make money (although that would be nice). If I don’t find an agent, expect even more releases on Smashwords (which then converts my manuscripts to iBooks, Barnes & Noble, the Kindle Store, etc.).

Also, I expect to write about two to three novels this summer. I hope I can fulfill that goal. 🙂


GOAL #2: PLANE SITCH

When I was a kid, I always told people, “I want to be a pilot.”

At sixteen, I had my first flying lesson. While I enjoyed it, I wasn’t sure I was ready to commit to that path.

At nineteen (last summer), I bought a pilot book on learning the ropes of flying, and I became obsessed with it in Argentina. For all the classes in which I was learning nothing, my pilot book was able to give me new information, new knowledge, new insight.

At twenty, I hope to be flying.


GOAL #3: MAKE MONEY (BUT MAKE THE MOST OUT OF MY TIME)

Money is valuable, but my parents have instilled the concept in me that money isn’t everything. I want to be able to afford certain luxuries in my future, like travel and a nice car and a Mac computer, but I know that what really matters is time.

I took a personality quiz as a joke once (although I do love personality quizzes, just not the one called “Love Languages” or whatever). I thought it was hilarious that my friends and I were taking this quiz when virtually none of us have ever been in love or are in relationships. But then I remembered that there is more than one type of love, and my special “love language” (or the thing that I enjoy most about my relationships) is quality time. 

I only have two summers left before I graduate college and am expected to be a full-fledged adult. That means time is running out. However, I’ve still got time to pursue my passion (writing, of course), goals (a healthy bank account which will be destroyed by flying lessons), and creating long-lasting relationships.

While I may be freaking out about this “time crunch,” I am reminded that life is not certain at any point in time. Tomorrow, I could die in a car crash, or six months down the road, I could receive a terminal diagnosis. Therefore, I may be “stressed” by the pressures of becoming an adult, but this is actually a good thing.

Time has blessed me with choice.


THEREFORE…

Por lo tanto, I am encouraged after writing this blog post. My troubles are insignificant, but I know I have one life, and I want to make the most of it.

Expect more books from me. Expect more blog posts from me. Expect some complaining and some hard times, but also excitement and new discoveries. That is what I guarantee you!
